APIDevelopment&Integration

API integration helps separate applications exchange information so employees do not have to enter the same data repeatedly. The difficult part is not simply making two endpoints communicate: it is deciding which system owns each record, how updates are reconciled, and what happens when a dependency is unavailable. Start with a scoped assessment of one workflow: identify the source of truth, available interfaces, access owners, and the evidence needed for an implementation decision. Assessment outputs, fees, responsibilities, and timing are agreed before work begins.

Connect your applications without losing control of your data

API integration helps separate applications exchange information so employees do not have to enter the same data repeatedly. The difficult part is not simply making two endpoints communicate: it is deciding which system owns each record, how updates are reconciled, and what happens when a dependency is unavailable. Start with a scoped assessment of one workflow: identify the source of truth, available interfaces, access owners, and the evidence needed for an implementation decision. Assessment outputs, fees, responsibilities, and timing are agreed before work begins.

What an engagement can include

Potential workflows include customer onboarding, product and price synchronization, order creation, inventory visibility, invoice status, and approval notifications. For Dynamics 365 ecommerce integration, the exact Dynamics product and environment matter. Finance & Operations and Business Central should not be treated as interchangeable APIs. Endpoint availability, authorized sandbox access, data contracts, and representative anonymized test records are dependencies for validating an integration. The initial assessment can separate confirmed capabilities from assumptions and blockers; implementation and production changes require a separately agreed scope.

Deliverables to agree before work begins

  • For an initial assessment: a reviewed workflow and ownership map, endpoint evidence, dependency owners, open questions, and a recommendation to proceed, investigate, narrow the scope, or stop.
  • An estimate where evidence supports one, with assumptions, exclusions, proposed implementation acceptance criteria, and any separately scoped validation needed first.
  • For separately agreed implementation: a data-flow map and an ownership matrix for customers, products, prices, orders, and other relevant records.
  • Versioned API contracts, field mapping, validation rules, and environment configuration requirements.
  • A failure-handling design covering duplicate requests, retries, reconciliation, and operational alerts.
  • Integration test evidence for successful requests, denied access, invalid data, dependency failures, and recovery.

Important tradeoffs

Real-time synchronization is useful when a business action needs an immediate response. Scheduled synchronization can be more suitable when eventual consistency is acceptable or an upstream system has strict request limits. The design should explain these tradeoffs instead of promising that every record will always be instantly synchronized.

Prepare for a project discussion

Bring the names and versions of the systems involved, available API documentation, a list of required workflows, and the people who can authorize access. A sandbox and anonymized sample records allow realistic testing without changing production transactions. Clarify which third-party team is responsible for fixing upstream endpoint or data issues.

Questions buyers ask

What does an initial integration assessment include?

Agree one workflow and its boundaries first. Bring the exact systems and versions, API documentation, anonymized examples, and business and technical reviewers. Review the agreed findings together: record ownership, interface evidence, access or data blockers, assumptions, and proposed acceptance checks. Accepting the assessment outputs is a separate decision from authorizing implementation. A build estimate depends on the available evidence; any further experiment, production work, or support must be separately agreed.

Can an ecommerce storefront be connected to Dynamics 365?

The integration must be scoped against the specific Dynamics application and available APIs. We can discuss customer, catalog, order, and status workflows, but their feasibility depends on the endpoints, permissions, and business rules available in your environment.

What happens when an upstream API is unavailable?

The design should distinguish retryable failures from permanent validation errors, avoid creating duplicate transactions, preserve a trace of the request, and give the operations team a clear recovery path. A failed dependency should not be reported as a completed transaction.

How do you test an integration?

Use agreed data contracts and representative scenarios in a sandbox. Test both success and failure paths, record identifiers across systems, verify authorization, and reconcile the resulting records before approving production use.
